Frequently Asked Questions....

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CHIROPRACTIC VISIT? (top)
On your first visit the doctor will take a detailed history of your health. A neurological/orthopedic examination will follow and if the doctor feels it’s necessary, x-rays will be taken. On your next visit you’ll be informed as to what your condition is and a treatment plan will be prescribed. Treatment may begin at this point.

IS CHIROPRACTIC SAFE?
(top)
Yes. Statistics prove that chiropractic care is one of the safest types of healthcare in the world. Compare the cost of malpractice premiums paid by chiropractors versus those paid by medical doctors and you can see where the risks are. While chiropractic malpractice premiums are not generally more than $ 2,500 per year, medical malpractice premiums can run into six figure amounts for certain specialties.

DOES MY INSURANCE COVER CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
(top)
Most insurance policies do cover chiropractic care but benefits vary from one plan to another. Our staff is trained to ask the right questions of your insurance carrier to learn the level of your coverage.

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT? DOES IT HURT? WHAT IS THAT “POPPING” SOUND?
(top)
An adjustment is the application of pressure on key contact points on the bones of the spine, usually by hand, utilizing those key points as levers to move the bones of the spine. It is necessary to take the bones to the end of their normal range of motion and then go just a little bit further. That is the art of Chiropractic; knowing just how much pressure to apply and just how much further to move the bones.

Normally an adjustment does not hurt, but sometimes there can be a mild discomfort because the body is reacting to a change to the correct position of the bones and muscles. This discomfort should only last from a few hours to a day or so in most cases. The “popping” sound is a release of gases in the joint capsules enclosing the joints of the spine.

WILL I HAVE TO CONTINUE CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE?
(top)
No; of course not. We have found over the years that patients who have experienced chiropractic care and have become aware of just how good they felt, will also be aware of when they are not feeling as healthy. Those patients find that chiropractic care on a wellness basis keeps them in top form and they enjoy the feeling. Think of it like going to the optometrist and being fitted with glasses. All of a sudden you see clearer, sharper images. Now do you ever have to go back to the optometrist? No; of course not. But in time you’ll notice that your vision isn’t as clear as it was. If you want to see better you’ll go back and get a check-up.

IS IT BAD TO “CRACK” YOUR BACK OR NECK A LOT?
(top)
Yes, because you don’t know in which direction your spine is misaligned and you don’t know how far to move it to correct the misalignment. Many people think the “popping” sound is a chiropractic adjustment, which it is not. If you feel that tightness in your spine and the need to move something back in place, it’s because part of your spine is locked in place causing another part to move too much. You may feel temporary relief but it soon comes back and you find yourself doing this more and more leading to the instability of the spine. If this sounds like you then you need to see a chiropractor and have your spine checked.

CAN PREGNANT WOMEN SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
(top)
Absolutely; many expectant mothers find tremendous relief of their aches and pains if they seek chiropractic care during their pregnancies. Also, many of my patients have reported having an easier time both during the pregnancy and during the delivery of the newborn. One of my patients commented she’d had three pregnancies without the benefit of chiropractic care and two with. The two with chiropractic care were the easiest of all. She wished she’d had chiropractic care with all of her pregnancies.

CAN A PERSON WHO HAD BACK SURGERY SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
(top)
Yes. Sadly, many patients who have had back surgery find themselves with the same complaints they had originally within about two years. Then they’re faced with having another back surgery. With proper chiropractic care repeated back surgeries may not be necessary. Surgery should always be a last choice and often conservative chiropractic care can eliminate the need for surgery.

AM I TOO OLD OR TOO YOUNG FOR CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
(top)
Age is not an issue. Dr. Palazzolo has treated patients between the ages of two weeks to 94 years young. What matters is are you healthy enough to undergo chiropractic treatment? This is why a detailed history, examination and x-rays are important. Experience tells us that some patients have serious conditions they are not aware of and should not be adjusted. When this is the case, we always refer to the appropriate medical specialist.

HOW MUCH TRAINING DOES A CHIROPRACTOR HAVE?
(top)
At Palmer College the curriculum is a graduate-level program that is typically completed in three and a half years, but is equivalent to a five-academic year program. Students enrolled in the Doctor of Chiropractic degree program take more hours in anatomy, physiology, diagnosis and neurology than those in a typical medical school program. In addition there is a minimum 90 semester hour pre-chiropractic college requirement for acceptance, however, many students begin their chiropractic studies having already obtained a four year degree in health related sciences.
